More than 100 years ago, the Fifth Count of Lonsdale – the first president of the National Sporting Club in England (founded in 1891) – organized the first boxing competition to take place with boxing gloves. The name of this famous Count Lonsdale was Hugh Lowther. He was an outstanding personality and a great fanatical sports fan at the same time. One of his distinctive character traits was his love of the colour yellow. This passion was responsible for being called “The Yellow Count”. In the 1930s, Hugh Lowther was also president of the Arsenal Football Club from London. This in turn explains why “The Gunners” still wear the colour yellow in their away jerseys. In the 60s and 70s, Lonsdale London started twice as a sports and fashion brand. London as a meeting place for pop stars; writers, actors, and other artists from around the world and Lonsdale rode along on the wave of this vibrant and exciting time.
